Recycling 101

Sustainability can be defined as the ability to exist in the present without compromising the abilities of the future. Here at Forecast we believe that environmental sustainability is the utmost important. Unfortunately the ugly side to the beauty industry is waste. More than 800 pounds of waste is produced by the beauty industry every single MINUTE to be put in landfills and we knew we had to make a difference.

That’s why we decided to take a stand against beauty waste and joined with Green Circle Salons (GCS), a company dedicated to recovering and repurposing waste from salons, resulting in us becoming a 95% sustainable hair salon. We recycle all forms of paper and metal, along with the small amount of glass we produce.

Collecting more than just the basics, we also recycle industry-specific materials such as discarded hair and hair color, used foils, and cotton. All the containers from the product brands we carry, Kevin Murphy and Eleven Australia, are made from recyclable plastic which allows us to recycle all used product bottles and cans.

During the COVID concern as well, we have adapted to recycling items like paper towels, gloves, disinfectant wipes, and disposable masks in separate boxes to reduce contamination while also remaining sustainable. Every trash bin in the salon is labeled with exactly what goes into it, then collected every week to be boxed off and sent to GCS in Canada, where they clean and breakdown the items to be remade into another material. We take pride in doing our part to reduce landfill waste to improve the environment.

What kinds of things are made with the items we recycle through Green Circle?

  • Hair: is composted, turned into bio-composite plastic, used for scientific research, or made into products to be used for humanitarian efforts.

  • Excess color: is turned into clean energy or is separated into water and oil—the water is cleaned and returned to the water system and the oil is blended into fuel.

  • Metal: is sorted by grade, melted down, and made into new products like bicycles and car parts.

  • Single use items: are used in a waste-to-energy process to create clean, renewable energy—and the leftover ash can be used as a filler in asphalt.

  • PPE waste: is turned into clean, renewable energy to power homes and businesses, while the ash can be used to make filler in asphalt and other construction materials such as bricks.

  • Paper and cardboard: is sorted, turned into paper pulp, and used to make paper products or cellulose insulation.

  • Plastics: are sorted, cleaned, ground into small pieces, and used to create new products like shampoo bottles!

That’s a green circle of life we like to see! What’s a way that you can help? When done with your product bottles, bring them to us to recycle and we will give you 10% off your next product!
